Il mantenimento di una corretta igiene orale è fondamentale per conservare una buona salute orale. La quotidiana rimozione degli accumuli di placca batterica può e deve essere effettuata dal paziente con spazzolino, dentifricio, filo interdentale ed altri strumenti (come scovolini o fili particolari) al bisogno. La placca che non viene rimossa si trasforma in tartaro, sostanza calcifica che non riesce più ad essere eliminata dal paziente.
